Two people have been injured after a teenager allegedly rammed three police cars with a stolen vehicle in Canterbury this afternoon.

Police were first alerted to the vehicle in the Bishopdale area of Christchurch around 2pm.

Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said police had signalled the vehicle to stop, however it failed to do so.

"Due to concerns about the manner of driving, road spikes were deployed in an attempt to safely bring the vehicle to a stop," he said.

"The vehicle was eventually successfully blocked on Main South Rd / State Highway 1 at Rakaia Bridge.

"During the incident, the driver rammed three police vehicles."

Two people sustained minor injuries, McDaniel said.

The driver was taken into custody without incident shortly after 3pm.

The bridge was closed while emergency services worked at the scene, reopening shortly before 4pm.
