One dead, six hurt in Christchurch house fire

Police at the scene of a housefire in Christchurch overnight.

One person is dead and multiple others are injured following a house fire in Christchurch last night.

Emergency services were called to Whitehall Street in Mairehau at around 8.25pm.

Four fire crews responded, with the building ablaze when they arrived.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said crews worked to extinguish the fire, with the last crew leaving just before midnight.

"Sadly, we can confirm one person has died," police said.

"A scene investigation is ongoing, and cordons remain in place in Whitehall Street and Hills Road for the time being," police said.
