Māori Queen meets with King Charles at Buckingham Palace

The Māori Queen met with King Charles, holding a private audience at Buckingham Palace overnight.

It's the first time Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po has met with the King since she became Māori Queen, and comes after she met Prince William earlier this week.

"Te Arikinui is focused on strong relationships between peoples as Aotearoa New Zealand approaches the 200-year anniversary of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 2040," a Kiingitanga spokesperson said in a statement.

Kiingitanga spokesperson Rahui Papa said the two discussed the passing of Te Arikinui's father, Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero.

He described the private discussion as being "heartfelt".

Papa said they also discussed the aspirations of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as it nears the 200-year mark.

There was also talk about commemorating the 200th anniversary of Te Tiriti.

Te Arikinui is in London this week as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations for The King's Trust, set up by King Charles, then the Prince of Wales, in 1976.
