Two women have been arrested after a stolen vehicle fled police at speed, leading to some dangerous driving through Tauranga for almost an hour this morning.

The pair, aged 29 and 25, now face multiple driving and property offences and will appear in the Tauranga District Court.

Acting Senior Sergeant Russell Owen said police first observed a stolen vehicle in the suburb of Bethlehem shortly after 7am.

“When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled at speed and was reported driving dangerously, including on the wrong side of State Highway 2 through an area with blind corners and narrow bridges.”

Road spikes were put out ahead of the vehicle which eventually stopped near the intersection of Cameron Rd and 11th Ave around 7.50am.

“Two occupants abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but they were quickly located and taken into custody.”

No injuries were reported and the vehicle has been uplifted for further investigation.

Owen thanked the public for their information and patience while traffic was disrupted.

“This was excellent teamwork and together we were able to bring this incident to a safe resolution, and take the two offenders into custody.”

One woman, aged 29, faced multiple driving and property offences. Another woman, aged 25 was charged with property offences and would be appearing in Tauranga District Court on May 18.
