Watch: Police pull pair from car in dramatic central Auckland arrests

Police take a man into custody on Nelson St after a fleeing driver incident.

Two people are in custody after a fleeing driver incident continued across several central Auckland suburbs before ending in a dramatic arrest in the CBD this afternoon.

Police first observed a vehicle travelling through Ponsonby without a front number plate about 12.25pm on Monday.

Acting Inspector Matt Limrick said officers signalled for the driver to stop, but the vehicle continued along Great North Rd.

“Further enquiries revealed the vehicle was also recently reported stolen,” he said.

The police Eagle helicopter located the vehicle and monitored its movements as it travelled through Mt Albert and Grey Lynn.

Limrick said a police pursuit was initiated "given the driver’s reckless actions, including excessive speed and driving on the wrong side of the road on multiple occasions".

The tyres on the vehicle were spiked, but it continued through the CBD until coming to a stop in traffic on Nelson St. Footage captured by 1News shows officers arresting the pair, near the intersection with Victoria St West, about 1.30pm.

At least 10 police vehicles, along with dog units, responded to the incident.

Limrick said police were able to block the vehicle in and arrest the occupants without incident.

"It’s extremely lucky that the dangerous behaviour of these people didn’t result in anyone suffering serious injuries."

Charges were being considered.
