A two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2 in Waikato has killed one person and left another with moderate injuries.
Police were called to the scene near Coxhead Rd, Mangatarata, about 6.30am.
The serious crash unit was now examining the scene and the highway remains closed between SH25 and SH27.
"A second person has reportedly sustained moderate injuries," police said.
NZ Transport Agency said detour routes were in place, and motorists were asked to avoid the area or delay their journeys.

A spokesperson said the highway had been closed between SH25 and SH27, with no expected reopening time given.
Eastbound traffic was being diverted via SH25 and Canal East Rd, while northbound traffic from SH27 was being rerouted the same way.
