An Otago man who allegedly returned a breath alcohol reading of more than three times the legal limit told police it “didn’t count because it was the blood of Christ”.
Police were called to reports of an erratic driver on Ravensbourne Road, between Dunedin and Port Chalmers, at around 6.45pm on Saturday.
Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman said the 53-year-old driver allegedly crossed the centre line multiple times.
Notman said the man told police he had not consumed any alcohol apart from sacramental wine at Mass.
A decision on whether the man will be charged will be made once the results of his blood test are received.
