Four people have been rescued after a trainee bus driver plunged the vehicle into Seine River in France.

The local transport authority told the BBC the trainee was near the end of her "practical learning" portion of the course in Juvisy-sur-Orge, about 20km from Paris, when she hit a parked car and careened off the road.

A spokesperson for Île-de-France Mobilités said the trainee was accompanied by a "lead driver" and two passengers.

Emergency services confirmed all four on board had been rescued from the water, where more than 90 firefighters, divers and police took part in a recovery operation.

Juvisy-sur-Orge Mayor Lamia Bensara Reda said in a post online that the driver had "lost control" of the vehicle near a station close to the riverbank before plunging into the Seine and dragging a parked car with it.

One witness said bystanders rushed to the scene and life rings were thrown out before emergency services arrived, the BBC reports.

Video from the scene showed emergency services working to retrieve the bus, including dive squads in the water and a helicopter in the air.

Île-de-France Mobilités has ordered an investigation into the incident.
