One person has been airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after a serious two-vehicle crash closed part of State Highway 1 in Kaiwaka this morning.
Police were called to the incident between Greenway and Mountain Roads shortly before 9.30am.
St John said it sent one helicopter, one ambulance, one rapid response unit, and one first response unit to the scene.
"Our crews assessed and treated three patients; one patient was airlifted to Auckland City hospital in a serious condition, the second patient was transported by road to Northland Base hospital in a minor condition, and the third patient had no reported injuries.
New Zealand Transport Agency said the road was closed north of the Kaiwaka township, between Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Rd and Baldrock Rd.
"Detour via Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Rd and Baldrock Rd, with diversions in place," the agency said.
Police urged motorists to avoid the area if possible, or expect delays.
