The person killed when a car crashed into a river in Bay of Plenty has been named as police seek sightings of a vehicle before the incident.

Whakatāne woman Ngahina Takarangi, 44, was killed in the crash on White Pine Bush Rd near Tāneatua just after 6pm on Tuesday. A second person was seriously injured.

In an update this morning, police said the circumstances of the crash were still being investigated.

"Police would like to speak to anybody who witnessed the crash that happened at around 6pm," a spokesperson said.

Police also said investigators wanted to hear from anyone who saw a red Honda Accord travelling in and around Tāneatua between 5.30pm and 6pm on the evening of the incident.

"If you have any information, please contact Police via 105, either over the phone or online."
