Two people are in hospital after a car left the road and plunged into the water in Wairoa this morning.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Carroll Street and River Parade at around 4.10am after a report of a car leaving the road and entering the water.
St John responded with one ambulance and one helicopter.
Two people were assessed and treated at the scene, then taken to Wairoa Hospital in a moderate condition.
"Work is ongoing to ascertain if anyone remains in the vehicle," a police spokesperson said.

Cordons were in place, and motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible.
