Two people have died following a crash between a car and a truck on State Highway 1 north of Timaru yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the crash near the intersection of Brosnan Rd shortly after 5pm.

"Sadly, two people died at the scene, while one person was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition," a police spokesperson said.

The serious crash unit was in attendance and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

The road was closed overnight, and reopened this morning, according to New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
