Two killed after truck and car crash on SH1 at Brynderwyn

"Emergency services are expected to be at the scene for quite some time," a police spokesperson said.

Two people have died after a car and a truck crashed in Northland earlier this morning.

Emergency services responded to the scene on State Highway 1 at Brynderwyn just after 3am.

"Sadly, the two occupants in the car were pronounced deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries, and was assessed and treated at the scene by St John.

Police said the road would be closed intermittently as the serious crash unit continued to work at the scene.

Motorists were advised to still expect delays and take an alternative route if possible.

An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash.

In a separate crash, police responded to a two-vehicle collision on State Highway 28/Whites Rd in Putaruru, Bay of Plenty around 5.20am.

The road was closed at both ends and diversions were in place at the State Highway 1 intersection, and the State Highway 5 intersection.

St John said it sent three ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and two helicopters to the scene.

"Five patients were assessed at the scene, with two patients, both in a critical condition, airlifted to Waikato Hospital (by helicopter) and the remaining three patients, all in a moderate condition, transported to Waikato Hospital," a St John spokesperson said.

Motorists were also asked to avoid the area where possible and expect delays.
