A police investigation is underway after 12 people died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a ski resort in Georgia, local authorities say.

The bodies of 11 Indian nationals and one Georgian were found on the second floor above an Indian restaurant in Gudauri in the Caucasus mountains, police said Saturday (local time).

The group were all believed to have been employees of the restaurant, CNN reports.

"Preliminary tests do not indicate any trace of violence on the bodies," Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.

"A power generator was placed in an indoor area [and] turned on, probably after the power supply was turned off."

The ski resort, located 120km north of the capital, was a popular destination for tourists.
