The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) are supportive of Glasgow taking over as hosts of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Games were originally set to be hosted in Victoria, Australia but due to spiralling costs the state pulled out.
The proposal from CG Scotland utilised the NZ$212.7 million offered from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) as part of the Victoria Commonwealth Games settlement.
This, together with Games revenue and the recent offer from CG Australia, of a further $4.9 million, has helped reduce the financial risk for the Scottish government.
“We congratulate the efforts and innovative approach of CG Scotland under these extreme and unprecedented circumstances,” said NZOC chief executive Nicki Nicol.
“To achieve this milestone and backing of the Scottish government is testament to the commitment of CG Scotland and the value they place on the role of sport in the Commonwealth.”
Glasgow isn’t a stranger to staging the event, as they most recently welcomed the Games to their city in 2014.
"Glasgow did a fantastic job of hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the city has since solidified its reputation as one of the premier sporting hubs in the Northern Hemisphere. We look forward to returning to Scotland and once again representing New Zealand on the Commonwealth stage."
However, the BBC reported that the Games will only feature 10 sports, compared to the 19 sports on show at the 2022 Games in Birmingham. At this stage it’s unclear which sports may get cut, but it’s believed that athletics and swimming will both be on the schedule for athletes as venues are already earmarked.
“While we still await the final sport programme and dates, it is great to have received this announcement, and we look forward to further details in due course.”
There will be no athletes' village at the Games, as well as reduced opening and closing ceremonies to cut costs.
New Zealand finished fifth on the medal table at the previous Games, taking home 49 medals with 20 of them gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze.
When Glasgow last hosted the Games in 2014, there were 17 sports and the event cost was £543 million (NZ$1.2 billion).
