A woman who went missing in Indonesia has been found dead, swallowed whole by a nearly five-metre-long python.
According to news agency AFP, 45-year-old Farida was reported missing after her husband said she hadn’t returned to her home in South Sulawesi.
The woman’s husband and other residents of the Kalempang village went looking for her on Friday – which was when they were greeted by the grisly discovery.
The village chief, Suardi Rosi, told AFP the woman’s husband "found her belongings… which made him suspicious".
After searching the area, the villagers soon discovered a reticulated python with a “large belly”.
Fearing the worst, the villagers decided to cut it open. The woman’s head was immediately visible.
Video, which appears to be from the incident, showed the snake being cut open and the woman entombed inside its skin.
She was then removed, wrapped up, and taken away for burial.
“I am forever sorry that I let my wife go out alone. If I had been with her that day, the snake would not have dared to touch her,” the husband said.
“I feel sorry for the suffering she went through. I am sorry for our family.”
Reticulated python are native to Southeast Asia and are the world’s longest snakes.
They are non-venomous reptiles, killing their prey by wrapping their bodies around it and squeezing.
In 2017, a seven-meter python killed a 25-year-old man on the same island.
