The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) said they are pleased with the news that Malaysia are considering hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

This comes after the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) announced this morning they received a formal invitation to host the 2026 Games from the Commonwealth Games Association.

“The Commonwealth Games are a significant sporting event for New Zealand. The Games provide our athletes with a valuable opportunity to test themselves against the best in the Commonwealth and represent New Zealand at a pinnacle multi-sport event,” an NZOC spokesperson said.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games were set to be hosted in Victoria, Australia but the state withdrew last year due to the costs of hosting the event exceeding their initial estimations.

The NZOC said they look forward to formal confirmation of a Games host.
