A man has been arrested after an incident in Taupō on Thursday last week saw multiple schools in lockdown for hours.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Yardley, Taupō Investigations Manager, said a man, 28, had been found at a Counties Manukau address today and was taken into custody.

On Thursday last week police officers, the armed offenders squad and dog units were called to the Taupō suburb of Hilltop after a man was reported to have been walking in the area while agitated and armed with a firearm.

Five schools and a kindergarten were placed into a lockdown shortly before the end of the school day, with the lockdown lifted by about 5pm.

"We understand this was a distressing incident, and police worked incredibly hard to bring this man before the courts," Yardley said.

"A 28-year-old man is due to initially appear in the Manukau District Court today on firearms charges relating to the incident."
