Police negotiated with two teenage girls for nearly an hour after they jumped into a public swimming pool fully clothed and refused to come out, following an attempted burglary in central Dunedin.
Officers were called to Moana Pool in the suburb of Roslyn at about 8pm on Thursday after reports the pair had made their way to the pool area and leapt into the water.
The girls then refused repeated requests to leave the pool.
Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Notman said police spent about 45 minutes negotiating with the teenagers before they eventually got out of the pool at around 8.45pm.
"[They] subsequently became uncooperative and were arrested before being returned to their parents."
While the pair were referred to Youth Aid over the pool incident, police were also investigating their alleged involvement in an attempted burglary earlier in the day.
Notman said the girls were accused of trying to steal e‑scooters from a store on George St at around 4pm yesterday and fled on foot when confronted.
