Early morning fatal crash on SH1 in Otago

One person has died in a crash on State Highway 1 in Otago this morning.

Police were called to the single vehicle crash just south of Milton at 12.45am.

A second person from the car sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

State Highway 1 between Lakeside Rd and Moneymore Rd remains closed to allow the Serious Crash Unit to examine the scene.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash were underway.

The year has got off to a disappointing start on the roads with 36 deaths recorded in January.
