A man has been charged over a fatal dog attack in Northland last year.

Neville Thomson, 69, died last August after being attacked by a pack of six dogs in Panguru.

Police shot dead one of the dogs and captured two shortly after the attack, while the rest of the pack were "destroyed by police" in the following days.

Police have been making inquiries into Thomson's death for more than a year, and have now charged a 59-year-old man with owning a dog which caused injury or death.

He is due to appear in Kaitaia District Court on Monday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Fouhy said it had been a challenging investigation.

“We appreciate this has taken some time, however this was a complex investigation, and we thank the community for their patience and assistance while we worked through the information gathered.

“Police hope these arrests bring reassurance to the family of Mr Thomson.”

Thomson's daughter, Nataria Moore, said at the time that her father's death had rocked the community.

"We’re surviving, just. It’s a shock. When I found out, I felt like the air had been taken from the room," she said.

"This has shocked our community, it shocked our family."
