Police are looking for a white BMW sedan as they investigate a stabbing at a massive illegal street racing event over the weekend, which involved more than 200 cars.
Hundreds of people gathered on Saturday night on State Highway 27 near Springdale in Matamata-Piako, to watch or participate in burnouts and racing.
Nine vehicles were impounded by police, and “a number of people” were arrested during the event.
At around 12.30am, police say two people were stabbed, suffering moderate injuries.
Investigators are now looking into the stabbing, working out the “full circumstances of what occurred”.
“A number of items were seized from the scene to assist with our investigations,” a police spokesperson said.
Other people involved “are believed to have been travelling in a white BMW sedan”.
Police stopped and checked more than 200 vehicles, and a number of drivers were found to be in breach of their licence conditions.
"Dozens" of people were found to have breached license conditions and committed other offences, which resulted in nine vehicles being impounded.
Some were also found to be over the legal breath alcohol or blood alcohol level and have been summonsed to court.
Police also claim fireworks were shot at officers by the group, meaning it had to use “strong measures” to shut the event down. Footage from the event is being reviewed to identify the vehicles involved.
Police are asking the public for any information that would help the investigation, particularly from the period just after midnight.
“If you have any footage or information which may assist our investigation into this incident, or of a white BMW sedan leaving the area around the time of the stabbing, please contact Police on 105.”
