Flights resume at Christchurch Airport after lightning strikes

A Christchurch Airport spokesperson earlier told 1News lightning strikes "across the campus" had impacted airfield lighting and navigation systems.

Flights have resumed at Christchurch Airport after lightning strikes earlier affected some of its "critical infrastructure", leading to cancellations and diversions.

The airport said in an update this afternoon "there will be impacts up and down the networks, with delays and disruptions".

"Passengers should check with their airlines as to any impacts on travel plans."

Airways confirmed all systems at the airport are now operational again.

It comes amid a thundery day for the region.

Fire and Emergency NZ said it had had a "relatively busy morning" with a number of calls for activated alarms due to intense thunder storms.

"The rain caused some surface flooding in small number of properties in Christchurch and Timaru," the Southern communications centre manager said.

MetService said it recorded 2mm of rain in a single minute at Christchurch Airport.
