Police have said the Head Hunters member, 32, was the victim of an "appalling display of violence".

A man has been charged with murder after the fatal gang-linked shooting of Charles Pongi at an Auckland reserve in August.

Police have said the Head Hunters member, 32, was the victim of an "appalling display of violence".

He died in Auckland Hospital after self-presenting with gunshot wounds. A homicide investigation was launched.

"More than 70 gang members from the Head Hunters, Rebel MCs, and associates converged on the Taurima Reserve in Pt England on 5 August for an intended brawl," police said in a statement today.

"Early this morning detectives, supported by the Armed Offenders Squad, executed five search warrants across Tāmaki Makaurau."

Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin announced two arrests after the searches.

A 24-year-old Mt Albert man is charged with murder, assault, and unlawful possession of a firearm. A 26-year-old Weymouth man is charged with discharging a firearm with intent to intimidate, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Both men are set to appear in court today — but Baldwin said the investigation remains ongoing.

"Police would like to thank the Pt England community for their patience and their support while we have been making inquiries into this incident," Baldwin said.

"The Operation Pastel team remains committed to holding further individuals to account."

It comes after a 28-year-old man was earlier arrested for breaching his electronically monitored bail in relation to the incident.

And Pongi's funeral saw a number of arrests made and vehicles seized.

Anyone with information is urged to call 105.

"There are people in the community that have direct knowledge of the individuals that are involved, and I urge them to do the right thing.

"Contact the police and nominate suspects, albeit anonymously," Baldwin has said.
