Cyclone Vaianu is moving away from mainland New Zealand.

Wind gusts of up to 150km/h were recorded, while thousands lost power across the Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

Only a heavy rain watch remained for Northern Taranaki, Waitomo, Taumarunui, and Taupō west of the Lake until this evening.
