A man has died after being swept into Southland's Waiau River this afternoon.
Police were called to the scene after being alerted by friends of the 20-year-old Riverton man earlier today.
A wide-scale search was launched involving police from Tuatapere and Te Anau, Southern Lakes helicopter, a Fiordland Marine Search and rescue crew from Te Anau, a local jet boat operator, and volunteers from local residents and farm workers.
The man's body was found by a helicopter crew in the water near Monowai Lake Rd, in Blackmount, a short time later.
"We would like to thank them all for their assistance, despite the tragic outcome today," police said.

The man's death will be referred to the coroner.
