BBC denies reports of Top Gear cancellation after Flintoff crash

The BBC has denied reports that Top Gear will be taken off the air after a 46-year stretch.

According to a Saturday report from The Sun, the British broadcaster had told production staff on the programme to seek other work after presenter Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff was seriously injured in a crash during filming last December.

A BBC spokesperson today said: "A decision on the timing of future Top Gear shows will be made in due course with BBC Content."

The statement comes after an alleged BBC insider told The Sun that there was "no way [Top Gear] can continue after Freddie’s crash".

"There's a feeling it would be in bad taste to continue making such dangerous material," the insider said.

"It's a tough decision but they know deep down it's the right one as hardcore fans of the show won't want to see a lightweight version."

Filming on the hit series was halted last year after Flintoff's accident, the former England cricketer making his first public appearance last month during the one-day international between the Black Caps and England in Cardiff.
