It's been a wild and frightening night for many in the North Island as Cyclone Gabrielle brought high winds and rain.

A number of people were forced to leave their homes, and in West Auckland's Muriwai, a house collapsed with firefighters inside.

One is critically ill in hospital while one person remains missing.
