SH1 north of Kaikōura closed after fatal crash

One person is dead after a crash involving a truck and a car near Kaikōura this morning.

The accident happened on State Highway 1 at Hapuku shortly before 6am.

One person died at the scene.

A second person received minor injuries.

Police say SH1, north of Kaikōura, is expected to be closed for some time while emergency services attend the crash.

There are no diversions. Motorists are asked to avoid the area or expect significant delays.

Police would like to speak to the occupants of a white van, which was seen in the area at the time of the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has any information which could assist police, is asked to contact 105, quoting event number P052047473.
