5435 Covid-19 cases on Thursday, 15 deaths reported

There are 5435 new community Covid-19 cases in New Zealand, the Ministry of Health has announced on Thursday.

The numbers were reported over the past 24 hours.

There are 377 people in hospital with the virus, nine more than Wednesday.

Six people are in an intensive care or high dependency unit, one fewer than 24 hours ago.

The ministry also announced 15 deaths of people with Covid-19. It said 12 of those had died this month and three had died in April and May.

Of the 15 people who died, two were aged in their 30s, one was in their 60s, three were in their 70s, six were in their 80s and two were aged over 90.

Five were from the Auckland region, three were from Northland, two were from the Southern DHB area, and one each were from Taranaki, the MidCentral DHB area, the Wellington region, Canterbury and South Canterbury.

Eight were men and seven were women.

The latest deaths take the total number of publicly reported deaths of people with Covid-19 to 1374.

The seven-day rolling average of deaths is now 12.

The seven-day rolling average of cases is 5451, down from 6059 a week ago, and down on 5777 24 hours ago.

Thursday's positive cases, detected through rapid antigen tests (RATs) and PCR tests, are located in Northland (144), Auckland (1602), Waikato (391), Bay of Plenty (171), Lakes (77), Hawke's Bay (155), MidCentral (219), Whanganui (75), Taranaki (159), Tairāwhiti (40), Wairarapa (47), Capital and Coast (463), Hutt Valley (220), Nelson Marlborough (226), Canterbury (819), South Canterbury (88), Southern (492) and West Coast (44).

The location of three cases is unknown.

The ministry said 5244 of Thursday's cases had been detected through RATs and 191 through PCR tests.

A total of 4247 PCR tests were carried out in the last 24 hours, while 11,919 RAT results were reported.

The number of active community cases is 38,138. They were identified in the past seven days but have not yet been classified as recovered.

There are also 107 new imported cases of Covid-19, the ministry announced.

On Wednesday, 5554 community cases were announced.
