Police are investigating after a human skull reportedly washed up in Tauranga this morning.

Police told 1 NEWS they received "reports of bones" washing up on Rangiwaea Island at 8am today.

According to SunLive, they were sent images of the human skull from a person who encountered the bones while fishing this morning.

Police say they are making inquiries.
