Junior doctors call off strike in week before Easter say DHBs

April 4, 2019
DHB Spokesperson Julie Patterson says doctors' decision to walk off the job over working hours is disappointing.

Junior doctors have called off their strike in the week before Easter, district health boards said this afternoon.

Junior doctors, also known as resident medical officers, who work in hospitals had given notice of a four-day strike from Monday April 15 to 19, which is also the start of the school holidays.

DHBs say the doctors who're member of the Resident Doctors Association withdrew the strike notice today.

DHB spokesman Dr Peter Bramley says the health boards are pleased the possibility of disruption to services has been avoided.

He says mediation is scheduled in Auckland tomorrow and DHBs will "continue working in good faith towards a negotiated solution".

Dr Bramley says DHBs want to decide the doctors' rosters without the ability of Resident Doctors Association national office "vetoing what’s been agreed by local teams".

He says DHBs are committed to safe rosters backed by evidence-based practice and are committed to the right balance of service provision training and employee wellbeing.

Junior doctors have held a series of strikes over the dispute.
