A new party combining ideals from both National and the Greens could be "very compelling" for New Zealand voters, National leader Simon Bridges opined today.

"I do think it could be a very valuable option for New Zealand," he told TVNZ1's Breakfast, referring to an article in the NZ Herald over the weekend that quoted Vernon Tava, who ran an unsuccessful Green Party leadership bid.

A Blue-Green Party, Mr Tava told the paper, is "certainly something I would take seriously.

"I've always said it's a great idea and what we need."

Mr Bridges said National had "nothing to do with it" and won't get involved in the creation of another party.

However, he said it could open options as a coalition partner for both major parties.

"A party in the centre based on the environment could be very compelling if it had the option to go with either National or Labour," he said.
