Wellington school kids who walked down to Maranui Cafe in the hopes of ‘getting a glimpse’ of the royal couple this morning ended up getting a lot more than they bargained for.

Children from Houghton Valley School who made their way to the famous cafe got swept up in the activities thanks to some luck and friendships, teacher Monica Mercury said.

"We just thought we’d come for a walk and head back after a while and we thought we might get a glimpse of them," she said.

"We thought we might come down and sing and get some attention and we did.

"I actually know some of the police officers – friends in high places!"

At one point, the Duchess of Sussex left the conversation to return to the cafe where she asked staff if cakes could be given to the children. The cafe happily agreed.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were at the cafe to speak with mental health workers.

The lucky children told 1 NEWS it was an 'epic' experience.

"They asked us what our names were and also they were really nice and just talked normally to us,” one said.

"My legs were shaking so much," another added.

The royal couple are now heading to Abel Tasman National Park to visit some of the conservation initiatives managed by the Department of Conservation.
