Employees of two separate Waikato McDonald’s restaurants were left terrified overnight during two smash and grab robberies.

Waikato Police say the heists appear to be related.

Officers briefly chased a suspicious vehicle near the scene of the second robbery at about 5.25am, but the pursuit was abandoned due to safety issues.

The first robbery happened at about 3.50am on Queen Street in Cambridge – while the restaurant’s seating area was closed but the drive-thru was open.

After smashing a window, a group of people took the tills and left the scene in two silver cars, said Detective Sergeant Kelvin Leonard.

Staff hid as the robbery took place, he said.

Roughly an hour later, a McDonald’s on Thomas Road in Hamilton was targeted.

"A group of offenders again smashed their way into the restaurant and took the tills before leaving in cars," Mr Leonard said. "Staff hid in the bathrooms and were not injured."

Police remain at both robbery scenes this morning as they continue to investigate.

Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to call Hamilton Police at 07 858 6200 or leave an anonymous tip with Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
