Search underway as man falls overboard in Volvo Ocean Race

A member of Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag has fallen overboard during the current leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.

A search and rescue operation is now underway for British sailor John Fisher, who was wearing safety equipment at the time of the incident, in the early hours of the morning (NZT).

The incident took place approximately 1,400 miles west of Cape Horn, with water temperature at nine degrees celsius, however conditions are expected to deteriorate in the coming hours.

In a statement, race officials said that the appropriate rescue efforts were being taken.

"The team, along with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), has been conducting a search and rescue operation to recover the missing crew member, John Fisher (UK), who was wearing survival equipment when he went overboard. The remaining crew are reported safe," the statement read.
