A car crash death in the early hours this morning near Tauranga has been a bad start to a new year on the roads.
It follows a horror final toll for 2017.
Two fatalities in Tasman and Whangarei last night brought the number of deaths for the year to 380, the highest since 2009 when 384 were killed.
Auckland, with 64 deaths and Waikato, 62, had the highest regional tolls, followed by Canterbury with 55, while there were five deaths in Taranaki.
