Visitors and residents of Waiheke Island are being urged to cut down on flushing toilets and showering as a severe water shortage grips the island.

Properties on the island run on tank water, but water delivery companies are already fully booked until March.

Unfortunately for those residents, the influx of tourists in the summer season is adding to the strain.

One Waiheke resident said the shortage is causing "a sense of panic".

Water supplier Steve Malcom said his phone is "ringing hot" but he is booked up until March.

"I can't take the calls and sometimes it just gets so heavy the phone system crashes, so it's best they listen to the message and understand I can't take any orders."

Mr Malcom is currently delivering up to 30 tankers of water a day and his bores can't take any more than that considering there hasn't been a decent downpour in six weeks.

Around 9,000 residents live on Waiheke Island, but in the summer the population increases to around 40,000.

Tourists arriving to the island are oblivious to the water situation, one tourist said she had "no idea".

The Council is encouraging locals to use council supplied water dotted around the island.
