Thunderstorms are expected to roll in over much of the North Island today, with some areas possibly receiving severe storms.
MetService says a front will approach from the west this morning, with a moderate risk of storms in Taranaki, Manawatu, the north of the West Coast and northwestern tip of Marlborough.
There is a lower risk in the morning of those storms making it inland to parts of Waikato, Central Plateau and Kapiti Coast.
From the afternoon, the areas affected and likelihood of storms increase, with all parts of the North Island north of the Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa likely to be impacted.
The Auckland area and Waikato have a moderate chance of thunderstorms, as do the Bay of Plenty, Central Plateau and Hawke's Bay, with those areas possibly seeing severe storms.
Severe storms could bring downpours of up to 40mm per hour, and small hail, MetService said.
