Severe thunderstorm watches in place for upper North Island

Auckland and Northland can prepare for more stormy weather across Monday.

Severe thunderstorm watches are in place for Northland and Auckland until Monday night.

MetService warned there are moderate risks of heavy downpours and storms for both regions, with the potential for 25mm to 40mm of rain.

For Northland, the watch is in place between 7.15am to 9pm, while the one for Auckland and Great Barrier Island begins at 11am and will last until 9pm.

A severe thunderstorm warning was registered for the far north area of the country at 6.52am but was lifted after 7.52am.

Tuesday could look to be similar, with more heavy rain forecasted for the upper North island.

MetService said significant rainfall can cause flash floods, low visibility and slippery roads, and warned motorists in the areas to drive carefully and be alert to avoid any danger.
