US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has vowed to fight back in a new social media video after Democrats made major gains in the midterm election.
Some lawmakers have vowed to push impeachment proceedings against Hegseth after Democrats took control of both the House and Senate in Wednesday's election.
Hegseth acknowledged that “a disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly”, referencing Republican Representative Thomas Massie.
Massie first introduced the articles of impeachment in September and has pledged to revive them next week unless Hegseth resigns.
In his video, Hegseth argued that “it’s all about the politics of personal destruction” and said that “won’t work with me. You can rest assured of that”.
He also defended his anti-diversity policies, the administration’s war in Iran and strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in Latin America, saying that “narcoterrorists should die, not be caught and released”.
Much of the post-midterms speculation about potential Cabinet shuffles has centred on Hegseth, a key architect of Trump’s unpopular war with Iran who could be a top target of congressional Democrats.
Trump told reporters that he is not considering replacing Hegseth, saying “I think he’s doing a very good job”.
Hegseth has been talked about as a potential appointed senator in Tennessee, where GOP Senator Marsha Blackburn won the governor’s race and could pick her interim successor.
“I actually think he’d be very popular if he did that,” Trump said.
Hegseth moved to Tennessee with his family in 2022, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
