An Adelaide supermarket owner had a narrow escape from disaster after a car ploughed through his shop where he was working.

Mark Schirripa was checking stock at a Woodville IGA when the vehicle broke through the wall, sending food and shelving flying across the store.

Speaking to Channel Nine, Schirripa said he was caught off-guard by the incident.

"I heard a loud bang and a wave hit me from behind," he said.

No-one was seriously injured, but Channel Nine reported Schirripa broke a rib when he was hit by shelves.

The 31-year-old driver was fined for "reversing more than necessary", according to South Australia Police, but she and her 29-year-old passenger were unharmed.

Making light of the situation, Schirripa joked about his close shave, saying the driver must have misunderstood what the supermarket was.

"Maybe they just thought we were a drive thru - thought they’d come in, pick out a few specials," he said.

ABC News reported the Woodville store would take "a couple of weeks" to be repaired and had only been open a month under Schirripa's ownership.
