Eight people were taken into custody after police were called to Hutt Hospital following reports of a person with a firearm this morning.
Police were called to High Street at around 10:20am. The hospital went into lockdown for a "short period of time".
"The lockdown was lifted shortly after those allegedly involved were located and apprehended outside the hospital," Inspector Wade Jennings said.
During a search of their vehicles, officers found several weapons, including a loaded gun.
Jennings said a number of firearms charges would be laid following the incident.

"This is an isolated event, and police are not seeking anybody else in relation to it," Jennings said.
"There is also no threat to public safety following this incident."
