A man is at large after scores of plaques were stolen from an Australian cemetery – with investigators releasing a headshot of the alleged thief.

Jacob Rapana, 32, is wanted on warrants after up to 160 brass plaques were taken from a Cheltenham cemetery, in Melbourne's southeast.

The Charman Rd property is believed to have been targeted between October 1 and October 10.

Police released a headshot of Rapana on Friday in the hopes it could help with their ongoing efforts to track him down.

The 32-year-old is described as being of Pacific Islander/Māori appearance, about 1.65m tall with long, black hair, a skinny build, and a single brown eye.

Investigators said it is possible Rapana is sleeping rough.

Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery has urged members of the public who fear they may have been affected to register their details.

"This week, we discovered that a number of memorial plaques have been removed or damaged," it said in a post to social media on October 15.

"We know this news may be upsetting, particularly for families with loved ones memorialised at the cemetery."

The 150-year-old cemetery said it had notified police and was supporting their investigation.

"Our teams are also carrying out inspections across the cemetery and contacting affected families where possible."

Anyone with information about Rapana's whereabouts was urged to come forward.
