F1: Lawson delivers in Texas to secure top 10 start for US Grand Prix

Liam Lawson of New Zealand and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls prepares to drive in the garage prior to qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of United States at Circuit

Liam Lawson will have another opportunity to add to his Formula 1 points tally at the United States Grand Prix after securing ninth on the starting grid, while Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli stormed to pole position in Texas.

The Racing Bulls driver made it through to the final stage of qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, a track he had previously described as his favourite on the race calendar.

Lawson faced a nervous wait in the second stage of qualifying (Q2) after slipping into the elimination zone, but produced a 1m 35.058s on his final flying lap to scrape through by just 0.022 seconds.

The 24-year-old ultimately sat out Q3 without setting a time, with teammate Arvid Lindblad's five-place grid penalty promoting him from 10th to ninth on the starting grid.

It marked Lawson's eighth top-10 qualifying result of the season, and puts in a strong position to challenge for points in tomorrow's race.

Meanwhile, Antonelli secured pole position ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Isaac Hadjar, putting the 20-year-old Italian in the strongest possible position to clinch his maiden Formula 1 world championship.

A victory in tomorrow's race, combined with teammate George Russell finishing ninth or lower and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton fifth or lower, would be enough for Antonelli to secure the title.

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar equalled his career-best qualifying result in third, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Hamilton rounded out the top five.

Ferrari had looked particularly strong throughout the weekend, with Leclerc and Hamilton topping all three practice sessions, but the Italian team was unable to carry that pace into the final stage of qualifying.

Kimi Antonelli would be the youngest F1 championship winner since Sebastian Vettel in 2010, who was 23 years old.

Lawson had shown promising pace in the lead-up to qualifying, finishing sixth in the second practice session at the Circuit of the Americas with a fastest lap of 1m 36.331s.

Despite the promising result, the Kiwi had remained cautious about his qualifying prospects, suggesting ninth was likely the best he could achieve.

He was full of praise for the Austin circuit coming into the race weekend, saying: "I'm excited, it's always a good atmosphere here."

The 24-year-old had also enjoyed a moment in the spotlight away from the track earlier this week, swapping his steering wheel for a guitar as he took to the stage to perform in front of a crowd of fans.

Lawson remained one of the few drivers on the grid without a confirmed seat for next season, even after a consistent run of points-scoring performances that had regularly seen him emerge as the best of the rest behind the top four teams.

The United States Grand Prix will take place tomorrow morning (9am NZT).
