Chris Hipkins is expected to face questions about Labour’s slide in the polls when the party fronts media in Hamilton at about 3.30pm.

He is visiting an aluminium manufacturer before the stand-up.

Last night’s 1News Verian poll had Labour on 27%, its lowest result since the 2023 election, as National surged to 32%.

Labour campaign chair Kieran McAnulty said today the result had “taken everybody by surprise”, predicting “there’ll probably be a correction” in next week’s poll.

Hipkins also slipped three points to 17% as preferred prime minister, behind Christopher Luxon on 20%. Speaking yesterday, he brushed off the result.

“One poll is not an election result,” he told 1News.

“We’ve got real momentum. We’re getting great feedback on the ground.”

The election is 17 days away.
