A cyclist has died following a crash involving a car in Christchurch this morning.

Police said it was called to Dyers Pass Rd in Governor's Bay at around 10.20am after receiving reports of a crash.

"Sadly, the cyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene," said Senior Sergeant Chris Wakelin.

"Our thoughts are with their loved ones during this difficult time."

Dyers Pass Rd was closed between Summit Rd and Governors Bay Rd, and motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

The serious crash unit had been notified.

Inquires into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing, police said.
