The Government acquired a 13-hectare piece of land in preparation for a future South Auckland hospital.
The $45 million site was bought from Fisher and Paykel Healthcare and is positioned across from their research and development precinct on Karaka Road in Drury.
Health Minister Simeon Brown said the purchase aligned with other future healthcare projects in the area.
"South Auckland is one of the fastest-growing parts of New Zealand, and it's essential that our health infrastructure keeps pace with that growth," he said.
"Securing this 13-hectare site in Drury gives us the opportunity to plan ahead and ensure we have the space needed for future health facilities that will serve local communities for decades to come."

With State Highway 22 nearby and a new Ngākōroa railway station in the works, Brown said the proposed hospital would be in an accessible location for users of multiple modes of transport.
Brown said the site was chosen intentionally.
"Location was a critical consideration. We wanted a site that would be easy for patients, families, staff, and visitors to access, whether they are travelling by train, bus, or car," the minister said.
"With excellent transport links and room for future development, Drury is well positioned to support the healthcare needs of South Auckland as the area continues to grow."
Health New Zealand (HNZ) would work alongside National Infrastructure Funding and Financing, who were asked by the Government to lead the project developments.
A hospital was announced as one of the options for how the land would be used, but multiple facilities have been hinted at.
"By securing this land now, we are ensuring future governments and health planners have the flexibility to develop modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that can respond to growing demand and changing healthcare needs," Brown said.
