A 23-year-old woman was walking from Flemington Station through Airey Park in Homebush, in Sydney's west, around 11.15pm (local time) on Friday, September 18, when she was stopped by an unknown man, police said.

The man, 27, then allegedly restrained the woman and dragged her into nearby bushland, where he sexually assaulted her.

"The 23-year-old woman left the scene a short time later and reported the matter to police," police said in a statement.

"Officers attached to Auburn Police Area Command commenced a joint investigation with State Crime Command's Sex Crimes Squad under Strike Force Januzi."

He was charged with aggravated sex assault – inflict actual bodily harm, intentionally choking without consent, taking a person with intent to commit a serious indictable offence and stalk/intimidate with intent to cause fear of physical harm.

The man was taken into custody and is due to appear in Bankstown Local Court on Friday.
