Driver allegedly crashes stolen car, attempts carjackings

A man has been taken into custody after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle before attempting to carjack other vehicles in Auckland this afternoon.

Police said they were called following a report of a vehicle stolen from Roscommon Rd in Manurewa at around 4.07pm.

The vehicle was spotted on Lambie Dr but took off "at speed", crashing shortly afterwards at the intersection of Ormiston Rd and Te Irirangi Dr in Flat Bush.

"The driver has fled on foot and attempted to get into other cars waiting at the lights but was unsuccessful."

Footage from the scene showed significant damage to the vehicle, with a traffic light knocked to the ground and debris scattered across the intersection.

Officers arrived at the scene and the man was taken into custody "without issue".

Inquiries into the initial theft of the vehicle were ongoing.
